Ch. 14 – Burning

POV – Bilbo/Frodo

In which Bilbo ponders jealousy, degrees of relationship are recounted, and Frodo finds a new use for his thigh.

Bilbo has to do some more thinking about his own desires, though he’s trying to ignore them. Frodo is hopeful others will stop ignoring his.

Took clan politics raise their head as Bilbo talks to Gis, the only hobbit there who is older than he is. The personal is the political in a traditional society. We get a hint of the tensions and the generational divide. The one character who does not make an appearance here to the degree she should is Lalia Clayhanger, matriarch of the Great Smials.

Frodo continues to do battle in the tween politics of the Hall, and manages to score some well deserved points.

  1. Yes, Gilda is a puzzle. I had forgotten the conversation with Gis – lots of politics. Ula shows up just at the right time. 🙂
