Ch. 72 – Due

Due – Denethor POV – 4 of 4

In which the idyllic sojourn comes to an end and things too long deferred come due.

Money, respect, and obligations are all owed. Giving people their due, due to arrive, and in due time. Boy, oh boy, but does a certain elusive captain owe a whole bunch of people a great deal, especially his uncle.

And, it’s pretty much all downhill from here, except for Faramir’s birth. There will be a lot of death (I once not-totally-facetiously nicknamed HotK “Four Funerals and a Wedding” but then I got a few more weddings tossed in) and a lot of devastation.

Poor Beregar.

At some point, Denethor had to have a certain conversation with a particular person. It is not yet at an end, though it won’t always be conducted in words.

  1. I like Violet, too. Especially in this chapter. Her boon, how she asked it, how Finduilas handled it, how it turned, has been a favorite scene. A fine end scene to this chapter! Of course, there was no reason why Violet had to ask, he even said he’d wanted to, heh.

I think “Violet” would be a good name to search on through the chapters …

  2. Violet was a needed corrective for both Denethor and Ecthelion. Denethor needs to accept Violet as a person in her own right, not just an object or a victim. Ecthelion needs to see her and have that last moment of love and release. For me, that is when he gains his redemption in the tale.

“Violet” is in the tag cloud to the left.
