Ch. 48 – Sleight

Sleight – Denethor POV – 3 of 3

In which Denethor goes on a furious search, afraid of what he will find, and Thorongil is given an opportunity to prove his loyalty to the High Warden.

Right on schedule, the bottom drops out.

Thorongil has to face, up close and personal, the damage he is doing to Gondor simply by being there. He’s been able to lie to himself that the conflict between Denethor and Ecthelion would have happened anyway. He’s been telling himself that the King’s Men have nothing to do with him and are part of the infighting in the Steward’s family. He’s not going to be allowed to deceive himself on this count any longer.

  1. Holy shit. I assumed (as did Denethor, apparently) that any shenanigans like this would be instigated by Maiaberiel. Yeah…faction follows Thorongil, for now.

  2. The king-o-meter sets people off. They can’t refuse to respond to Thorongil’s true nature, no matter how he cloaks himself. People of true heart, like Denethor, Finduilas, Thengel, Brandir and the like, they respond correctly, being heartened by the hidden king and act on their best natures. Those who have been corrupted, like Maiaberiel and Malantur, they simply respond to the power inherent in the person, and use the excuse of the king to act out their deadly plans. They are heartened, true, but for evil, not good.
